When i first listened to Bright Midnight's song i thought... meh, it's ok, then i listened again and thought... oh, it's quite good... then it got better and better... so much so it's on my station now Laughing

I'm a sucker for Thomas's recent songs atm, love the mood he puts in them.

Mike Hanson's song reminds me of Tracy Chapmans first album, it's the only i've heard of hers, it's a fine song.

Listening through all these songs was nothing but very enjoyable though, all good tracks.

thanks for the kind words! glad you listened to it more! and also the station add, it means a lot Smile

impressions:

Sails- having listening to this when steve gilmore did his review of this, im a little ahead of the game on this. love this track. its the vocals that do me in on this track. its a good one, very atmospheric.

Solitude - a well produced track for sure. chorused-out guitar sounds great, although a little less chorus would make it perfect. guitar sounds crisp, a very well done instrumental. i think some live drums would really open up the track though.

Gone For Good - another well produced track. great guitar work! sounds really nice. vocals sound great. this genre isnt usually my taste, but it really reminds of me the way my friend plays, but you have got a little more guitar skill. great energy towards the end.

Two Faced Millionaire - man these tracks are good this week, i honestly do not know how im getting votes this week haha. well produced, drums that actually sound good, are they live? great vocal, really minor-y, great timbre, reminds me a little of Josh Homme. i really like this track.

Queen Bee - oooh, some heavy stuff here. a little like RATM, at least in the rhythm section. very well produced and put together, are the drums live? great guitar work, a contender for sure.

Walking Wounded - very interesting track here. almost cinematic. very cool instrumental backing. vocals are good, very moody. this track gives off an emotion very well. swirling, lost, very good.

Killers of the Worst Type - me likes this track Very Happy

Only Carbon Lifeforms - interesting opening, like nothing ive heard before, sounds like something the Beatles would do haha. very intricate, well produced, not one weak track here so far. wow, this is good. thats all i can say haha.

Asylum of Wonderful People - wow, this is big. driving, pulsating, this is what ive come to expect from Parker when i give his tracks a listen. very well done, well mixed.

Good People - hmm, a shift in silvertrain that i thought i knew haha. still pop rockl, but dropping the piano and slinging the electric over their shoulder. well done. this is never been my taste, but its still very well done, and requires some serious talent. these dudes have it all.

Blazing - the mix is a little dull, had to crank up my monitors for this. but the guitar work is there. nice wah-wah work? it probably could be put a little more front and center. i do like the wailing of the vocals. they are the highlight of the track for me for sure. are the drums live?

Madness - i remember nuriel from a previous contest, he didnt fare well, since his piece, although very well done, was not in people's taste. this one seems a little more my speed. very well done, intricate, i like the saw work, as well as that background synth. this may be the dark horse in the competition, IMO.

well, tough week, all the tracks were great, i cant accentuate that enough. it really comes down to personal tastes.

so....
1st- 2Faced Millionaire - Ian Dadon - well done, love your vocals, your minor-y sound. 2 thumbs way up.
2nd- Sails - Thomas J - a very solid track, really did love it.
3rd- Nuriel- Madness. this reminds me of "Joyride (Night Version)" with the saw work. thats a very good thing.

Honorables:
1. Only Carbon Lifeforms - CSTD
2. Gone For Good - Mike Hanson.

Sorry i couldnt vote for you all!!!

Ok I am ready with my picks, but I am suffering as badly as any other month. I thought with Honorable Mentions I would not have a problem with leaving good music out ... but of course, this is not true. The contest is drawing some incredible pieces. So it is just my selections based on whatever goes on in my brain when I listen to these pieces.

1st Place - Thomas J. - Sails - Thomas has a way of delivering a profound message in a few words as he captures our modern existential condition. How we are under pressure to become something we don't want to be ... forced into a mold. It is a struggle that goes on until we can't struggle anymore whether we become exhausted or just die from the effort. All this done in the best of Thomas's unique musical style.

2nd Place - Mike Hanson - Gone for Good - Maybe you can see I am impressed with good song writers and Mike qualifies as exceptional. An odd song concerning the worry about missing out on completing our life's goals. The worry that the process of concern is delaying accomplishment. Add to this that Mike is a true performer delivering an entire brilliant musical package with his voice, guitar and rhythmic slaps.

3rd Place - Pidgeman - Solitude - I swear my speakers were glowing when I heard this ... the visualization of music. There is something so complete and almost flawless about this guitar performance. Great chills when the electric guitar comes in ... this is what I need in my instrumental music. It is a hard thing to do, but this piece rises above many well conceived vocal performances.

Honorable mentions for some exceptional songs and performances:

Cheers! James Crosbie Hancox - Walking Wounded
Cheers! JPC - Queen Bee
Cheers! Ian Dadon - 2Faced Millionaire

I am shallow and need immediate gratification...depth of musical character is an idea totally foreign to me... Embaressed

Razz

therefore:

1. 2 faced millionaire - Ian Dadon - catchy as hell in a Go-Betweens kinda way. Love it, even though raw and unfinished.

2. Killers of the Worst Type - Bright Midnight
- Doors meets Joy Division meets lo-fi indie brilliance - I dig it loads...but that ain't jazz.

3. Good People - Silvertrain
- catchy guitars - catchy tune. Good enough for me...see above. Wink

Honourable mentions - Gone for Good - Mike Hanson; Only Carbon Lifeforms - Can't Stop the Daggers and Walking Wounded - James Crosbie Hancox.

Sorry I don't have time for detailed comments on everyone this week - after many listens, there were eight of the 10 that really stood out for me.

WELL DONE EVERYONE!! Rock On!

1. Cant Stop the Daggers - Only Carbon Lifeforms - stunner.
2. Ian D - 2 faced Millionare - Sounded like a mix between bowie and radiohead
3. Thomas J - Sails - Beautiful tune but the production held it back in my mind

honorable mentions to:
Mike Hanson
Nuriel

Holy Moly, i don't think some of the finals have had a spread this strong. Good luck to all, in my opinion 5 deserved winners :/

hey thanks for the vote! the only reason i put it as jazz so i could have all my songs chart at the same time haha. its only semblance to jazz would be the bass line and the heavy ride cymbal, maybe haha.

Thanks for the votes/comments guys much appreciated... Cool

So here goes with mine...

1 - Pidgeman - Near perfect Craig and like Larry said when the electric comes in... Shocked

2 - Mike Hanson - I think someone already mentioned Tracy Chapman? Great song Mike... Very Happy

3 - Ron Vogel - Not sure why this hasn't got any votes yet? Took a couple of listens to get into but worth persevering. Nice little number Ron.

HM's go to Thomas, JPZ & Artificial Wonders...

Good luck everyone!

It's a work in progress...You may have heard the latest mix. The first rough mixes were pretty dull.

Thanks for the vote!

Here are my votes

1) James Crosbie Hancox - walking wounded. I just love this piece to death! The piano part and it's sound with the vocal is completely awesome!

2) Thomas J Marchant - Sails. I love the sound Thomas gets from his piano (acoustic?) Such a low attack, and very dreamy. This song has a Radio Head quality to me that I like and enjoy a lot.

3) Silvertrain. - Good People. This is a good back-to-basics rock tune just as adverdtsed.

Honorable mentions to Mike Hanson, Pidgeman, Ron Vogel.

Best to all,

Gary
